On April 12, Roosevelt had passed away and the new USA president was Truman. Potsdam Conference (Jul 1945) After Germany was defeated and war was finally over, the Allied powers met once again. This was due to the fact that Poland was already under USSR military force. The only slight disagreement was with Poland Stalin wanted USSR to move its borders into Poland, Roosevelt and Churchill were against this but in the end they gave Stalin a go ahead.
It was also agreed that Eastern Europe be declared a Soviet sphere of influence since USSR has suffered immensely during World War two. It was agreed that countries being liberated from German invasion would be allowed to hold 'free' elections and choose their government. Despite their many disagreements the three powers managed to come to a conclusion. Yalta Conference (Feb 1945) - The Yalta conference The Allied powers USSR (Stalin), USA (Roosevelt) and Britain (Churchill) met in Ukraine, Yalta to discuss what was to happen to Germany after it had been defeated. The tension and opposing beliefs, proxy wars that existed until 1989. So the two countries ended the 'hot war' and began what came to be known as' the cold war'. The whole world was in fear of world destruction. After 1949, when USSR had its own atomic bomb (after learning that USA had its atomic bomb, through the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki). After the second world war the two allies became sworn enemies. USA and USSR where allies they were working with each other. That was why the conflict stayed a 'cold war' both sides tried to undermine and destroy each other, but they dared not let it go to actual fighting - that would have destroyed them. Why? It was mainly because the existence of nuclear weapons made hot war MAD ('mutually assured destruction'). But that conflict never came to open warfare ('hot war'). What was the Cold War? For more than 40 years - 1945-1989 - the USSR was in conflict with the West. The story of the Cold War is the story of how two allies who defeated Hitler became competing superpowers who took the world to the brink of extinction.
